TAW presents: TOP GUN 2017

IT’S THAT TIME OF THE YEAR AGAIN EVERYONE…….
TIME FOR TOP GUN  PRESENTED TO YOU BY: THE ART OF WARFARE – DCS DIVISION

We are back with ROUND 4, but it will be called TOP GUN 2017 from now on and the years will obviously increase in the future.

DOWNLOAD THE MISSION FILE HERE !!

What is Top Gun?

The Top Gun event is in its fourth incarnation and has been an intense and awesome event so far. This has provided us with some of the best dogfighting we’ve ever seen.

This event has been created, planned and will be hosted by TAW (The Art of Warfare) in association with Situational Awareness. Therefore ladies and gents it will count towards your SA ranking.

The formula is the same as last year, but make sure you read the rules to get an understanding of how it will work.

When is it?

1 vs 1Saturday 11th of November 2017 @ 1500z

2 vs 2Saturday 18th of November 2017 @ 1500z

What can I fly?

Our roster for aircraft available this time around is the following:

SU-27
SU-33
F-15C
M2000C

How will it work?

The event will be split into TWO separate competitions, a 1vs1 and a 2vs2.
For the 1vs1 competition we have 32 slots to fill and for the 2vs2 we are going to get 16 teams (32 slots).
8 slots from each competition have already been reserved for invitees.
Once signed up, pilots will then be sorted and assigned matches.

RULES and LOCATION on DCS MAP:

Every match will be best of 3 rounds, i.e, first pilot/team to win 2 rounds will be declared winner. The Final Fight will be first pilot/team to win 3 rounds (best of 5).

Pilots/teams will spawn head to head and airborne at exact same speed(800 km/h TAS) and altitude(5000m) and having exact same fuel burn time:

F15 – 71% FUEL @ 5000m 2 x IR Missile = 5 min BURN TIME
SU27 – 55% FUEL @ 5000m 2 x IR Missile = 5 min BURN TIME
SU33 – 50% FUEL @ 5000m 2 x IR Missile = 5 min BURN TIME
M2000C – 38% FUEL @ 5000m 2 x IR Missile = 5 min BURN TIME

Pilots will spawn in a 50km diameter combat station (bubble); the goal is to destroy the opponents or force them out of the bubble.

A warning message and sound will alert pilots when getting within 5km from the borders.

A trigger will blow up any unit flying out of the combat zone if there is still an opponent flying.

If all opponents are down, exiting the bubble will declare you winner of the round.

If the hosting server crashes before a winner is declared, the round will have to be restarted; only one client-side disconnection per pilot/team is eligible for a round restart; any further disconnection will count as a loss regardless of when it happened.

If a client disconnects after the first merge, it will count as a loss. If a client side disconnection happens before the first merge, the round shall be restarted.

Pilots must use the same aircraft until the match is over but can fly a different one in the next match.

Fuel dumping is allowed.

Print screening is forbidden, server will notify admin when someone is print screening; this is a serious breach and will result in an immediate round loss; any further print screening will result in a disqualification.

Ping Limit is set to 400ms.

Players can swap sides after each round.

In case of a dispute, tracks will have to be provided. The admin’s decision will be final. Tracks from participants may also be required whenever deemed necessary; failure to provide a track when asked for will result in the loss of the round.

The three rounds will be structured like this:

#### 1vs1 ####

– Round 1 –
Pilots will be provided with 2 heat seeking missiles (SU27/33 – R-73, F15C – AIM-9, M2K – Magic) and their aircrafts gun, all of which will be employed post merge only.

– Round 2 –
Pilots will be equipped only with their GUNS ONLY, in traditional Top Gun fashion, again firing post merge only.

– Round 3 –
If after round 2 the score is tied then we repeat round 2 GUNS ONLY to get our winner.

#### 2vs2 ####

– Round 1 –
Pilots will be provided with 2 heat seeking missiles (SU27/33 – R-73, F15C – AIM-9, M2K – Magic) and their aircrafts gun, all of which can be employed pre merge.

– Round 2 –
Pilots will be equipped only with their GUNS ONLY, in traditional Top Gun fashion, again firing can be pre merge.

– Round 3 –
If after round 2 the score is tied then we repeat round 2 GUNS ONLY to get our winner.

We strongly believe in showing good sportsmanship, therefore all matches will have a referee who will orchestrate the match and resolve any issues that may arise during.

You will not be allowed to switch airframes once the match has started, you must complete all three rounds with the same airframe. You can change airframes in between matches.

For attendance to the event itself, you must show up 30 minutes before your match begins, if you aren’t present in the TeamSpeak lobby 30 minutes before your match then we will already contact reserves.
If you do not show up 15 minutes before the match someone from the reserve list will fly your match. If no reserves are available, then the match will be ruled as a walkover win.
It’s very important that we keep the event running, so that others will not suffer for someone else’s tardiness.

Alot of organisational work goes into preparing an event like this, therefore we need to stick to a strict timetable to keep everything running smoothly, we hope you understand the reasons for the above.

Finally, keep yourself up to date with the event by checking the thread here, just in case any changes are made. Have fun!

Where do I sign up?

Anyone and everyone is welcome to sign up to the event, for 1vs1 and 2vs2, it doesn’t matter how skilled or unskilled you think you are.
Simply visit the relevant signup form below and enter your details in, once done, hop back to the thread here and just post your callsign into the thread so we can contact you easily if necessary.

!!! REGISTRATION IS CLOSED as of November 1st 2017!!!

PLEASE NOTE:
We strongly encourage you to sign up even if you believe that we have reached our limit for players, we’ve noticed plenty of AWOL’s at past events so we therefore want a strong reserve list!

The Byholma mislanding

In the world of sims, it is sometimes a good thing to remember that there is real history behind our games and modules. In addition, sometimes that history can be quite hilarious!

Viggens

There are several “tall stories” regarding various mishaps and incidents with military aviation, even out of peaceful Sweden. This is the account of such an incident which actually made the news.

(As with all stories of this nature, due to the passage of time and the “game of telephone”-style recounting of the event, several details may have been omitted, glossed over, enhanced or outright fabricated over the years. Grains of salt are called for on all parts.)

On Wednesday, November 16th, 1994, the two-ship JA-37 Viggen fighter element consisting of element lead Petter 29 and his wingman Petter 19, out of the F16 air base in Uppsala, were to land at the Byholma air base (ESFY) as part of an exercise.

The element lead landed according to plan, but as the wingman was coming in, something happened, as related in this (abbreviated) transcript of the radio communication:

FF (Petter 19) declares inbound.
MIF (Byholma ATC) relates wind heading, declares runway clear.
FF: ”I’m coming in for landing.”
FF: ”What crossing was this?”
FF: ”Do I go straight ahead from here?”
MIF declares he has no visual contact with Petter 19.
FF: ”Could it be that I landed in the wrong place?”
MIF reiterates he has no visual contact with Petter 19.
MIF: ”Petter 19, Are you on the ground or in the air?”
FF: “Stand by.”
Silence.
FF: ”I’m coming in.”
(Petter 19 sets down on the main runway and, after a bit of confused taxiing, parks on the apron.)

Now, what really did happen as the MIF was “standing by”? We turn to a description of the events as recalled by Mrs. Anette Rydén, wife of the local dentist.

For a bit of context, the Byholma base was a part of Sweden’s elaborate system of road bases, built during the cold war to provide backup runway capabilities in the event of attacks on the main airfields. A road base was typically made up of one primary, purpose-built runway surrounded by a set of smaller backup runways. These backups were essentially widened, straightened stretches of the surrounding main country roads, made big enough for one or two fighter aircraft to land and take off. Due to the spread out nature of this system of backup runways, these were normally used as ordinary roads by the public, and only closed off temporarily by the Air Force for exercises.

Viggen road base takeoff

On this day there were no roadblocks in the Byholma area, so Mrs. Rydén was out driving in her VW Beetle and had just stopped at an intersection between a smaller road and one of these widened stretches, about to turn onto the main road, when she spotted a “big military aircraft” rolling towards her along that very road.

Meeting the Viggen

Mrs. Rydén, whose interest in military aviation was pretty non-existent and who could really not tell any aircraft models apart to save her life, initially thought that the plane, complete with its pilot “in helmet and hoses and stuff”, might be a Russian invader. As it came closer, however, she spotted the Swedish “Three Crowns” symbol on the side of the fuselage and relaxed somewhat.

At a crossroads

At that same time, another local arrived in his car. He ran up to Mrs. Rydén and instructed her to back up and make room for the aircraft. They both backed up, and the plane backed up in front of them off the main road. After letting two lorries pass in front of him, the pilot then taxied back out on the road in the opposite direction, applied Stage 3 and disappeared up in the air.

Viggen takeoff

However, the proverbial cat was out of the bag. The local newspaper Smålandsposten published the story the following day along with an interview with Mrs. Rydén, where she reflected that “Now we might have to get radars in our cars” and that “They’re going to have to get license plates if they are to continue like this.”

The Kaukasus Offensive is back!!!

After some server issues, our team of dedicated members have revived the Kaukasus Offensive a.k.a. The KO!

The ‘Interactive Live Map’ is up and running, just click in the ‘KO Banner’ on the top of the main page, or click HERE.

Many WHOOHAAAA’s go out to DeadBeef for creating this great dynamic mission AND to the team of members making this happen behind the scenes!

EU Formation Flight 20 August 2017

We had a very cool and fun massive formation flight with a whole bunch of EU members and also a few NA members!

This is a video of one of our Weekly Sunday Events, this time we did a large formation flight (due to holiday season we had way less pilots online than usual). We took off from Anapa and flew to Sochi, at Sochi a few of our Helicopter pilots did a great little Heli Air Show! After that, without any warning, our airbase at Sochi was suddenly under attack by enemy forces….

We will be doing this again in approximately 1 month from now, combined EU/NA. Hopefully all EU and NA members will be back home form holiday, so will have around 90 planes flying around….
I really hope the server will hold up and not crash 😉

TAU made a great compilation video of the event, enjoy!

OPERATION: DARK MATTER

SITUATION:

LAS VEGAS has been occupied by RED Coalition forces.

But the real holy grail of universal warfare is the batch of ‘Dark Matter’, stored at Groom Lake AFB AKA Area 51.

It was owned by BLUE forces initially, but after a Nuclear attack by RED Forces over one year ago, BLUE army personnel had to leave in a hurry and had no chance to retrieve anything, including the ‘Dark Matter’.

Now both RED and BLUE forces are pushing for Groom Lake AFB to get the ‘Dark Matter’ which can be used to dominate the entire universe…….

We do not want to capture GROOM LAKE since it’s a completely contaminated nuclear area for the next 50 years, we only want the DARK MATTER.
So a few BRAVE helicopter pilots will need to suit up for a possible nuclear suicide mission, but for the greater good of their nation……

Combined EU/NA mandatory of July 30th 2017

So we had a GREAT event yesterday, where both the EUROPEAN and NORTH AMERICAN division played together in one massive online event.

I’d like to thank the EU/NA team who created and arranged this mission!

We had human ATC, GCI, Army Commanders and Operations Commander, who worked together to provide orders and tasking to all flights like strikers, chopper and fighters, to add to the immersion of virtual aerial combat.

I hope we can do this more often, but the time zone difference between Europe and America makes it a little difficult to align these events.

Again, thanks to all who joined and special thanks to the team who arranged this event.

NEVADA and NORMANDY

Both EU and NA now own all maps that DCS offers today, so obviously the CAUCASUS map, but also NEVADA and NORMANDY.
Because not all members own all terrain modules, we can’t hold our weekly mandatory events on any other map than the CAUCASUS.

To make sure we can still play on the separate maps together, we are doing weekly optional events on every Friday and Saturday:

FRIDAY NORMANDY FIGHT NIGHT

SATURDAY NEVADA FIGHT NIGHT

We switch this around every other week, so members who can not be there on a Friday/Saturday, still might have the possibility to fly the other day of the weekend.

See you guys there!

EU Fighter Platoon Leader

In the EU Division the following member has been promoted to be the new EU Fighter Platoon Leader, to take over some tasks from Dutch Baron:

Alephro

He has proved himself many times as a contributing, active, knowledgeable and friendly community member.
Congratulations on making this promotion, I am looking forward to work with you and I’m sure you will do a great job!
